Drama

History:
DRAMA has been a successful cultural activity at Parel Vallei for years now. Every year we look forward to the drama season when productions in Afrikaans and English are performed at the school as well as on tour. We take part in various drama festivals that give the learners exposure and experience in this field. In the past we have also taken part in festivals at Montagu and Springbok but at the moment we only focus on one tour and the 5 festivals on offer.

Activities throughout the year:
Auditions take place at the beginning of the year and are followed by the rehearsal process. Our PV PLAYHOUSE FESTIVAL is a week long festival hosted by Parel Vallei at the Playhouse theatre in Somerset West and marks the start of the season.

We take part in the following competitions:
• PV Playhouse Festival
• Pearson Interschools Festival
• Hoërskool Durbanville Theatre Fesitival
• ATKV Theatre Festival

Ideals:
We strive to create a love for theatre in our learners. We try to give them opportunities to be on stage as well as in the audience to show them all the various passions that lie within dramatic arts. It is also important to teach the learners what it means to portray a character to a large audience with confidence and discipline.
They also learn to work together in a team and to have a sense of responsibility towards each other.
Most of all we strive to enjoy every minute!

How to sign up:
Go for an audition. Any learner in the school may audition. Just keep your eye on the culture notice board for the details of these auditions. If you pass your audition then you become part of the cast. You will also get an opportunity to be part of the tech crew if you are already signed up on the PV Tech team.

Attendance policy:
We have a strict attendance policy. If you miss more than three rehearsals without a valid reason you might be at risk of losing your place in the cast. It is essential to arrange times around sport and other school activities in the drama season so that all available time can be used for rehearsals. In performance weeks, however, the productions take preference.

    2015 ENGLISH PRODUCTION: Life Wish
Written and directed by Yanou Pienaar.
Life hasn’t always been very good to William, despite his vague optimism that his lot in life would somehow improve. He has always wallowed in his own insignificance – a sad little man from a sad little town – until one morning he wakes up and decides to make a change. However, one problem stands in the way of William’s new life…the fact that he’s not so alive anymore. In his quest for happiness William meets -among others - a bartender with a penchant for dresses, Jack the Ripper and a tourist from New Zealand.
This year’s English drama, ‘Life Wish’ is a new text written and workshopped by the cast and directed by Yanou Pienaar. Liam Walsh (in Grade 12) played William, the main character who found himself having a bit of an existential crisis in his afterlife. Liam took top honours as the best actor at both the Klein Libertas and Durbanville festivals, and Jordyn Linklater (Grade 10) won the award for best supporting actor in Fraserburg. ‘Life Wish’ was also invited to perform at the gala evening of the Klein Libertas festival, as well as the Jan van Riebeeck High School culture evening.  Due to the fact that ‘Life Wish’ is an English play, it could not participate at the ATKV festival.
The play received a plethora of gold, silver and bronze awards, as well as nominations for directing, text and best production at the annual Logan Theatre Festival in Fraserburg. ‘Life Wish’ had its final performance at the Parel Vallei drama evening and it was greeted with a standing ovation at the curtain call – a fitting conclusion to a play that was a little bit funny, with a little bit of meaning.

PV’s Drama Department once again proved their mettle, setting a higher standard this year as they do each year.

This year, three pieces were staged, namely “The Project”, “Die man in die lugballon” en “WolkKop”.  All three productions excelled at various drama festivals such as Klein Libertas, Durbanville and Fraserburg. “WolkKop” by Mari Borstlap, shone as the winner at the Klein Libertas Festival in Stellenbosch and was also nominated as the WINNER of the ATKV Teen Drama Competition in the Western Cape.  This play was shortlisted as one of ten top productions in the country and was invited to participate in October in the final round of the ATKV Teen Drama Competition at the Aardklop National Arts Festival in Potchefstroom.

Initially, 210 productions were entered for the ATKV Teen Drama Competition. It is a great achievement for “WolkKop” to end up as the winner in the Western Cape and subsequently in the top ten nationally.

We wish the actors, the technical team and the director the best at Aardklop!

Proud to be a Parel Valleier!

    Die man in die lugballon

In 1997 we had a very important strategic session during which the staff, management and Governing Body plotted the future of our school.

After very meaningful discussions and deliberation, we came to the conclusion that we were entering a time of huge change. We were on the threshold of introducing OBE (Outcome Based Education) and realised that the one constant going into the future would be change!

We were very proud of our academic excellence and were working hard at bringing sport and culture up to the same level as the academics. Around the table we penned our Vision for the future: "EXCELLENCE IN A CHANGING WORLD"

Since those very important discussions we are very proud to be able to say that we really do achieve excellence in our ever changing environment.

Some 10 years ago my wife and I attended a stage production of the musical ‘Evita’ which depicted the life of Evita Peron, wife of the Past President of Argentina.
During the show, Evita says, in a very defiant moment: "I’m proud to be and Argentinian."

At school at the time, I was thinking about ways in which I could spark off some pride in the school. Although many of our pupils had tremendous talent, they were often lacking in confidence and were almost scared to show pride in themselves or their school. I took Evita’s words and entered our own name and got: "Proud to be a Parel Valleier". I motivated and encouraged pupils to buy into the concept of having pride in themselves and in what they do but without being arrogant.

We also started to use this slogan on the foot of all our outgoing mail and on our letterheads. Interestingly, some of the grade 8’s, when they answer the question in their little test about the motto of the school, say that, “Proud to be a Parel Valleier” is the school’s motto instead of the real motto "Sapientia et intellegentia."

Long may this slogan live in the hearts and minds of our learners and may they always be "Proud to be a Parel Valleier".
