At Parel Vallei, we have built up excellent facilities for the various sports we offer. Pupils are encouraged to participate in at least ONE Summer and ONE Winter sport which enables our learners to develop physically, as well as socially, as they interact with their team members and opponents. We also believe that, through sport, they are able to identify their strengths and use these to the benefit of the team in which they play. The working world needs young people who are able to slot into teams and work towards a common goal. We believe that sport encourages this.
Piece by piece this sport has grown in PV and currently we have 3 teams entered into league matches, and many social players who enjoy this ancient sport.
The school’s cricketing history began in January 1987 with one team in the Western Province Schools’ League and Fanie Janse van Rensburg as the pioneer coach. Now, we boast six teams.
Cycling has been on a ‘downhill’ roll at Parel Vallei since 2009. The team started from humble beginnings where Mrs Hanri Dalton, previous PV teacher took a few learners to ride some trails in the Helderberg.
PV Golf teed off in 2001. PV Golf enjoys the support of the Somerset West community and it is a great privilege to play golf at the Somerset West golf club free of charge.
Our 1st XI Girls’ Hockey team participates annually in a number of prestigious festivals and tournaments, including the Greg Belling Festival in East London, the St Mary’s Kloof Tournament, and the Cape Town International Tournament.
In 2022 our 1st XI Boys Hockey Team travelled to the Tony Godding Festival in East London, the St Stithians Easter festival as well as the Cape Town International tournament.
Netball has been offered as a sport for girls at PV since the founding of the school. At present more than 180 girls participate in this sport.
Rugby has been played at PV since the school’s inception. Parel Vallei Rugby strives to nurture and develop individual talent in an arena that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, discipline and humility.
Parel Vallei squash began in the nineties under the tutelage of Mrs. Judy Cawood. Initially there were only boys’ teams. Mrs. Sue van der Merwe soon started coaching girls.
During Parel Vallei’s foundational years, the head of the swim team undertook a bold endeavor. Miss Kuhn approached Strand Highschool and Hottentots-Holland High to request whether the school could participate in the Helderberg Inter-schools’ competition.
PV has had wonderful results at the tennis courts and everybody has good reason to be excited about tennis at PV. Our tennis is known for team spirit, fun, enthusiasm, and national and international achievements.

In the early years, we trained on three courts only, but nowadays we have six courts, one of which is an indoor court. The well- equipped terrain provides enough practice time and allows players to practise together and maintain fitness levels.
ACTIVITIES DURING THE YEAR:
Team-building camp
Every year a netball camp-cum-sleepover is held for all teams on the school’s premises to bolster spirit for the following season.
Tour:
Part of each year’s activities is a tour with our first team to give them a headstart to the coming season.
Elite training group
At the end of the season an elite junior and senior off-season group is chosen to train throughout the year.
Spring League
Netball players can also participate in the Spring League in the off-season, where learners have the opportunity to hone their skills and maintain a consistent level of fitness.
IDEALS:
We strive to provide all teams with maximum exposure to matches and to cultivate sportsmanship regardless of winning or losing.
Our focus is on each centre throw which starts with a zero score and that from there we will play hard after each throw regardless of the score.
More important than all goals we score, is that every netball girl is offered the opportunity to develop the necessary physical and life skills, so that she can reach her full potential and proudly achieve to her own benefit and to that of her school.
May our PV girls score many more goals on the netball court and also enjoy every moment off it as she strives to improve herself consistently.

This contest would take place annually at the Strand Municipal swimming pool and included several schools in the surrounding area. Each year they would eagerly compete for the esteemed trophy. Regrettably, over the years many of the participating schools reduced the amount of attention and time offered to swimming. Subsequently, the Inter-schools’ competition was no longer organsised, due to the exponential decrease in participation.
Despite the discontinuation of the contest, the Parel Vallei swim team continued to practice at Beaumont Primary and Strand Municiple swimming pool. This persistent determination has paid of in the form of excellent achievement.
Some of the brilliant results include: Lucy Saunders, who attained her South African colours in Life Saving and Ashley Oliver, who was selected twice as a member of the South African junior team, and participated in Brazil.
In addition, Christine Zwiegers, Yolandi van der Merwe, Shannon van Konynenburg, John van Zyl, Nic de Vos and Arlin Lincol achieved outstanding results on a national level.
ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR:
A grade 8 gala and inter-house gala are held annually with great enthusiasm. The team also competes in various regional relay galas.
Swimming practice for non-team members is held twice a week.

Nannie de Villiers is a well-known tennis player from PV who played tennis at an international level.
Every season boys and girls of all age groups enjoy this sport on the school’s six tennis courts.
Tennis at PV is growing annually and at the moment we have eight tennis teams enrolled in the Central Boland Tennis League.
ACTIVITIES THROUGH THE YEAR:
Every year during February the senior tennis players take part in the tennis tournament at Bredasdorp and the juniors get their chance during October. PV’s junior boys are part of the Boland Landbou Invitational Tournament in February and the tennis players take part in courses presented by EDGE Tennis Academy. Our top juniors participated in an invitational tournament at Hoërskool Stellenbosch in the fourth term.
League matches are played in the first and the fourth terms. Even though the second and third terms are not traditionally tennis terms, we continue with a squad practice under the tutelage of EDGE Academy twice a week for our top players.
Tennis is an all season sport at Parel Vallei. Players who are serious about the game will find everything they need at PV – plenty of tennis.
IDEALS:
We strive towards building this sport and to be competitive in all leagues. We want to build the level of tennis at PV in co-operation with the EDGE Tennis Academy and the professional coaching they offer our players.

Cross Country at Parel Vallei
Cross Country has been offered at Parel Vallei since the early years of our school’s founding. Learners are constantly encouraged to improve their times through proper preparation and training. Our goal is for all Parel Vallei Cross Country participants to gain expertise in the sport through participation in races and the Boland league.
Parel Vallei’s picturesque setting at the foot of the Helderberg offers the ideal training ground. Here, learners are encouraged to overcome the various challenges presented by participating in a variety of Cross Country races. The team of boys and girls sweat together as they ascend the notorious Spookheuwel (Ghosts’ Hill) and the upper slopes of the Helderberg during practice sessions, and celebrate together when they meet their target times or finish ahead of the clock. Our current and past provincial athletes include JP van der Walt, Tihanna le Roux, Geoffrey Collins, Jan Paul Herselman, and Selmarie Erasmus.
PAREL VALLEI ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY ACTIVITIES
Weekly practice sessions starting from the school include the ascent of steep, well-known hills and slopes:
In the third term, Parel Vallei’s runners will also compete in the various provincial championships in hopes of qualifying for the two national championships.
IDEALS
We strive to grow Cross Country as a sport at Parel Vallei by involving as many athletes as possible in Cross Country activities and by fostering a school culture that champions the benefits of physical fitness. We also aim to have more team members selected for the Boland, WP, and Western Cape teams.
